The band has a low-key sound akin to the idea of Elliott Smith had he had the opportunity to record with She & Him; it’s light, smartly developed and has the hooks to dig into your brain without you suspecting anything. The single, “Jesus Came To My Birthday Party,” is featured on their new album, due out on Tuesday, which is the follow-up to 2008′s Recordings of the Middle East. They’ve built their touring chops while opening for up-and-comers like Mumford & Sons, and clearly they’re a band worth keeping an ear toward. The next best thing to a new Reindeer Section album . . .
Anyone who tells you there’s no great pop music out there is either a pathological liar or just doesn’t know where to look. Case in point: Gary Lightbody (of Snow Patrol and The Reindeer Section) has put himself together one hell of a supergroup to be called Tired Pony. Their debut album’s already out in Europe and will be out Stateside on September 28th. And trust me, you’re not going to find another group with this pedigree coming out with a debut this year. Lightbody is teaming up with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Belle and Sebastian’s Richard Colburn, and will feature guest turns by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward (She & Him).
