With a voice that merges the best of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Billy Talent’s Ben Kowalewicz definitely gives his group’s latest music an ear-catchingly distinctive bent.
The Mississauga, Ontario, natives spent a decade in obscurity before rising to become Canada’s most successful touring pop-punk act. Their third effort, Billy Talent III, brings the rock in every way imaginable, assailing listeners with the one-two-three punch of “Devil On My Shoulder,” “Rusted From The Rain” and the ultimately single-ready “Saint Veronika,” suggesting that these Canadian rock warriors need to set their sights on a full-on US radio assault.
It’s difficult to imagine a more invigorating series of songs American radio isn’t yet playing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start talking about it now. As one of 2009’s most consistently solid pop-punk efforts, it definitely deserves to be heard on a wider scale south of the Canadian border.
