Lucius – “8 Birds”

Lucius

There’s been a revival in recent years of 60s era “girl bands,” with most groups tending to attempt to modernize the music by making hip-hop grooves seem retro (a la Amy Winehouse). Brooklyn duo Lucius, however, sticks closer to the era’s drawing board on “8 Birds,” which is featured on their MySpace page, for those curious to hear for themselves.

All the requisites are there — sunny vocals backed by instrumentation that feels light and fluffy even as a close listener can tell just how carefully layered it all really is. Radio won’t touch this with a ten foot pole because it’s not “current enough,” but the discerning pop music fan shouldn’t miss the chance to hear their music. I’m definitely going to be on the look-out for a copy of Songs From The Bromley House, their debut album.
