SONG REVIEW: Nicole Atkins – “Vultures”

Nicole Adkins

There’s something so raw about the quality of Nicole Atkins’ latest single, “Vultures.” It’s a heady blend of psychedelics and raw Americana rock, with vocals Johnny Cash would have loved to strip down and tackle on American VII had he lived long enough to do another acoustic album.  Couple that with a beautifully stark noir-ish video directed by Mandy Bisesti and Lucia Holm and you’ve got the recipe for a truly creepy and memorable piece of modern alternative.

Considering this is only the opening salvo off her yet-to-be-released 2011 album Mondo Amore, the quality here bodes well for what we can expect from this emerging songwriter.

Below you can view the video for “Vultures” — feel free to sound off in the comments area. And as a bonus, check out Atkins’ 2008 appearance on Letterman, playing her song “The Way It Is.” Enjoy!
