Brandi Carlile has made a bold move, releasing “That Year” as the latest single from her album Give Up The Ghost, which came out a year ago and certainly deserves to have a longer promotional shelf-life. The song itself is wrenching, an account of a friend’s suicide more than a decade ago, when Carlile was still in high school.
“You should have taken some time away,” she sings, “instead of a long drop, instead of leap of faith … ten years I never spoke your name. Now it feels good to say that you’re my friend again.”
Anyone who has gone through something like that knows how brutally honest this song is, and how amazing it is that Carlile can be so open with the raw emotion of this memory. And anyone who hasn’t can certainly appreciate the artistic depth within this beautiful, heartbreaking song. It’s my clear favorite from an album which stands out strong among her already high-quality discography.
