FEATURED SONG: Grieves – “Against The Bottom”

Rhymesayers rapper Grieves presents another winner for the label.

Rhymesayers has another stunner in its roster, and Grieves is set to show the country that he’s ready to carry the mantle launched by Atmosphere and Brother Ali. He’ll be setting out on a 35-date two month tour with Budo, Prof and The MC Type, to promote his new album Together / Apart, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, #13 among Rap Albums and at #106 on the Billboard 200.

His first single from the album, “Against The Bottom,” is a laid-back jam coupled with lyrics which dig deeply to illustrate the power of hope and love to save a soul from unrelenting, crushing depression.

I should’ve seen it when you broke down
Stop and listen, and stop acting like you don’t have a position
‘Cause I could see it from the jump when I kissed you
And feel it through the walls that you constantly put your fist through
You’re pissed, but you ain’t got to fight like this

The song’s almost relentlessly catchy, without Grieves having to lay on anything remotely artificial. He’s a truth-teller who should fit in perfectly with the rest of the Rhymesayers roster, and if you’re near one of these cities in September and October, his show should be a definite destination.

EDIT (11:05 p.m.) — Realized that this wasn’t his first single off the new album … the first was the wonderful “Light Speed,” an autobiographical four minute trip through what makes Grieves who he is as a rapper, what built his hip hop ethos, and where he stands as a man:

From these two songs I can assure you Grieves is the real deal. Looking forward to giving the album a few runs through the headphones and it may wind up reaching the level of SIMS’ Bad Time Zoo, which has to stand for something!
