John Jacob Niles and thanking God for good music

John Jacob Niles

John Jacob Niles

As we ready ourselves for Thanksgiving, here’s a recording I stumbled on by pure serendipity … I’d been marveling over Molly Skaggs’ version of “What Songs Were Sung” from A Skaggs Family Christmas Vol 2, and wanted to find the original … I failed at that count, but discovered its writer, John Jacob Niles and this magnificent voice so stunning I can’t find words to describe how suddenly it affected me other than to say it literally brought tears to my eyes. This is what music is all about. It’s shameful that most of his music is out of print, but nothing’s ever completely forgotten … once you hear the song below, you’ll know what I mean.

What music are you thankful for? I’d love to hear your hidden gems …
